Its fixed - I think:

After it logged itself off of the iinet dialup last night after 80 or so
minutes (THE PROBLEM), I put a win2000 box on the same modem etc and
when I woke up this morning it was still online.  Oh Oh, I am thinking,
my linux box is the problem.  So I swap the modem back and log in and
now its still online after 3 1/2 hours!

I am left with:
1) iinet fixed the problem between about 530pm and 9pm last night
2) or ditto for Telstra
3) The Jupiter moved into a more favourable conjunction with mars
4) iinet dialups need an occaisional fix of Bill Gates before continuing
to work.

ARRRRRGGGGG!

I have had no further communication from either Telstra or iinet so its
a mystery, but I actually favour reason 3.
