Check your referer logs (if you have them turned on) -- usually quite
informative.

My best guess is that linux.conf.au is mentioned in today's slashback on
slashdot, which has links to perth2003.linux.conf.au which has a link to
PLUG.  Even a tiny trickle from slashdot is quite noticable  :)
