The Promise ATA100 controller has been supported since very early 2.4
days - 2.4.0 actually. I adopted 2.4 immediately for that reason (I have
an A7V).
All you should _require_ is a 2.4 kernel based distro, which is most
(all?) of them these days.
Of course, running the system auto-update once it's installed can be a
good idea.
