You don't say what brand/model laptop it is, but have you tried
http://www.linux-laptop.net/ ?
They cover almost every type of laptop, and usually the people include their
X window configurations they used to make it work on each laptop type.

Subject: [plug] configuring X on my laptop

Hi all,

I am having all sorts of problems trying to configure the X window system on
my laptop. I've got most of the spec's down; the video card is
auto-detected, however the one thing that I can't determine is the monitor
type to use. It is an XGA TFT LCD screen, however this option does not
appear on the list of monitors that is provided when using the X
configuraiton tool. If I choose "custom", it asks for such things as the
verticle and horisontal synch rates - for which I do not know the answer. I
have tried a few defaults, but they do not seem to work with my monitor.

The (only) specification of the hardware that I can find in the manual that
came with the laptop says:

14.1" XGA TFT color panel.

Does anyone know where I can find out the horisontal/verticle specifications
for an LCD monitor? I've been working on this all night with no luck...

thanks heaps all

David Buddrige.
