Hello David

If you want to stop the XDM login, which is what suspect you want, and 
get back to a bask prompt, it will stop by issuing the command 
/etc/rc6.d/K99xdm. I do not run it myself but that is the directory you 
should find it. If you then have problems getting x to start ensure you 
have xclient-base installed.
