[plug] Promoting open source software

Hi
I am a convert to the concept of open source software, but also a Linux
newbie. However, I can't see why I cannot promote Linux and MS alternatives
in this Shire as I am the only computer professional in this and adjacent
Shires - that is when I get more fluent with Linux.
In the meantime, of course, people are ordering computers with Windows XP.
However, they are often very interested in a cheaper alternative to MS
Office and it occurred to me that I could start preparing for a Linux
conversion by:
1. partitioning HDD's so there is plenty of room to add Linux later;
2. offering open source software straight away.
This brings me to my question. Are there word processors and spreadsheets,
and to a lesser extent simple, Publisher-like, graphics packages (for making
greetings cards, signs and pamphlets) that can run on Windows and/or Linux?
I think Star Office comes in a Windows and a Unix/Linux version ???
Obviously if a Windows customer is used to something like Star Office, but
unhappy with the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) and other Windows
idiosyncrasies, it will be easier to convert them to Linux if they do not
have to learn new software.
I would appreciate your advice.
Kind regards,
James Elliott
