Found the problem...
It was because the kernel wasn't trying to load the
ramdisk at all, it was trying to mount the floppy
directly (and failing, of course).
I needed to specify "load_ramdisk=1" and
"prompt_ramdisk=1" in lilo.conf on the boot floppy,
then it worked fine.
Raises an interesting question though... I would have
thought the default settings of the two were set in
the kernel. But the kernel version hasn't changed. The
rest of the system has (RH6.2 originally, now potato -
actually a different machine), but the kernel has
always been official 2.2.18 with ext3 and raid
patches. Does that mean those types of settings are
really set in lilo, glibc, or similar? Food for
thought...
