How are you starting X.
gdm, xdm, kdm (auto-start on boot or on "init 5") or using "startx".
Have you tried startx as a normal user?
How about "startx /usr/bin/xterm -- " to start a failsafe session with
no wm, etc.
You can always try typing "X >& /tmp/xlog" and posting the log to this
group, that should be useful. Especially if you do this as root and a
normal user (say >& /tmp/xuser and &>/tmp/xroot ) to compare.

You could rm .xsession if you created one (sometimes its .Xsession) but
otherwise there aren't really any user level x files to become corrupt.
