What version of Kword are you using? I found that Kword pre-1.0 crashed 
frequently. Presently I'm running Kword 1.1.1 and it's never crashed. Plus 
I've discovered that it's really well designed forcing the user to choose 
whether to work in a text oriented layout (like all other WYWIWYG word 
processors) or a frame based page oriented layout which is much better for 
doing proper desktop publishing. The export filters still need a lot of work.

Have you considered upgrading? KDE 3.0 is out now. :-)

It sounds odd that Kword could crash X completely. JFTR, I write all my 
assignments using LyX cos it does all the typesetting for me, is great at 
footnotes, bibliographies, etc, and even if there's a power cut, when you 
reboot it will have saved a copy which was accurate to the letter when the 
power went down. It can export in PDF too which makes the files very portable.
