Yeah sounds like no OpenGL support.

Try
	xdpyinfo | grep GL
and see if GLX is listed. If not, and you have a 3D accelerated video 
card like one from NVidia, 3dfx, Matrox (*drool* parhelia) etc, make 
sure you're running the right XFree86 video "drivers" for your card and 
not the generic VESA/SVGA mode.
