[plug] Professional Linux Organisation

On a number of occasions, people have spoken either to or past me about the
possibility of a professional Linux association for WA, perhaps even an
Industry Association (capital letters because it means special things at
law).
Could those interested in such a thing please email me off list? If there are
enough of you/us we'll start another list to discuss setting up the rest.
The idea is to create a forum and organisation specifically targetted as a -
well, for lack of better terms - dignified and respectable router for
professional and industrial Linux contact. I think the membership would be
much pricier than PLUG, and would include PLUG membership (passed on to
PLUG's treasurer) to help ensure that the twain don't drift too far apart,
and PLUG doesn't get overlooked in the rush for respectability. Members would
typically be consultants, corporations, government departments and the like.
Ideally, such an organisation would remove pressure from the main PLUG lists
to become too stilted and formal, and would present a believably solid front
for `serious' businesses and departments (ie, `suits') looking for a place to
learn about Linux. It could be operated as a `Business SIG' of PLUG but would
not be marketed or presented that way.
If this forms as expected, CyberKnights will be a member, and I would expect
Terminus etc to be interested as well. Presuming interest, we will value
input from people like Alex Polglaze who have had great practical experience
with setting up and running organisations.
Cheers; Leon
