For some strange reason, pppd sometimes gets stuck in an infinite
dialing loop, never actually connecting properly. After looking through
the logs, I noticed the following:

Oct 30 18:05:09 portal pppd[280]: Hangup (SIGHUP)
Oct 30 18:05:09 portal pppd[280]: Modem hangup
Oct 30 18:05:09 portal pppd[280]: Connection terminated.
Oct 30 18:05:09 portal pppd[280]: Connect time 11088.6 minutes.
Oct 30 18:05:09 portal pppd[280]: Sent 42596925 bytes, received 173337579 bytes.
Oct 30 18:05:09 portal kernel: PPPIOCDETACH file->f_count=3
Oct 30 18:05:09 portal pppd[280]: Couldn't release PPP unit: Invalid argument

[after chat finishes connecting]

Oct 30 18:08:33 portal pppd[280]: Serial connection established.
Oct 30 18:08:33 portal pppd[280]: Couldn't create new ppp unit: Inappropriate ioctl for device
Oct 30 18:08:33 portal pppd[280]: Hangup (SIGHUP)

I googled the relevant keywords, but most people with similar troubles
are using putting it down to ADSL modem issues, but I'm not using ADSL.
In fact, the magority of people reporting this problem are using 2.5
kernels, and I'm only 2.4.19.

Does anyone know either what's going on or (even better) how to fix it?
(voodoo and virgin sacrifice have already been tried
