Hi,

Latest Debian would be fine. It gives you the option of using the 2.2
kernel. I'd then suggest not to install X on install but do an apt-get
install fluxbox or xfce once installed which will only get whats needed
for one of these light weight window managers to run.

Problem with running an older disto is the security vunerabilities that
have now been resolved.
