Just making sure: you have ensured that these performance reductions 
aren't due to load on the link (even load you don't know about), right? 
Normally I'd say run gkrellm or etherape on the firewall and forward it 
to display on your desktop but AFAIK smoothwall doesn't have X. Maybe 
install iptraf or similar.

Try taking a tcpdump during a problem phase and see if there's other 
stuff going through as well.

Are you getting packet loss?

Have you tried a new phone cable and/or socket?
