[plug] cups linux 2 linux

Usual disclaimers apply, I'm not in front of a linux box at the mo'. Check
out www.cups.org, and the cups mailing list archives for the real deal.

CUPS has changed its behaviour and the details of some of the config options
quite significantly between versions 1.1.12, 1.1.14 and 1.1.15, we need to
know which version you're running to really help.

qtcups (AFAIK) is just a qt front end to the cups client. The cups client
provides lp and lpr, so printing should work just using lpr -P<printer>,
once it's set up.

Does everything work on the server? I *think* the answer to that is yes,
because you said you can see the LJ1200 if the address is localhost.

If so, then you need to determine how the printer is being shared from the
CUPS server. The CUPS server can broadcast the details of all printers it's
serving, which enables any cups client to print to those printers without
any config on the client. If this is what you want, ensure that the file
/etc/cups/whatever_its_called.conf contains the lines

Browsing On
BrowseAddress @LOCAL

These lines enable browsing and export all printers accessible locally.
Once you'ev done that, the cups client on the other machine should be able
to see the LJ1200.

(the macro @LOCAL may just be a 1.1.15 option, I'm sorry , I can't remember
that much detail)

The other option is to not enable browsing on the server, but instead to run
a sevrver on each client, and point thequese you set up on the client's
server to point to the queue on the server. This is harder to say, but
easier to do. Unless you've got more than a few clients.

HTH
