[plug] partitioning question

Hi all,

Just joined this list the other day. Please excuse my newbieness :)  
I've just installed an old 6G disk to do some file system comparisons 
on... and  cant see it.
ie fdisk /dev/hdc gives
 Unable to open /dev/hdc
I can see fat32 partition on it if I boot into win98, and its definitely 
the master on second IDE slot.  What do I need to do?
....Perhaps someone can save me the trouble of running tests . I'm doing 
some home recording stuff with "ardour"  http://ardour.sourceforge.net 
and want to find out what file system type is the best for streaming 
audio data to/from ? XFS, ext3, etxt2, reiser? Anyone know of 
suitability/ performance comparisons between these?
