Your best bet would be the /proc/version file but that contains distro 
customised kernel stuff so it isn't a guarantee that it will have the info in 
it all the time.

There is also a bash script available that will look at distro specific files 
and work it out from there: http://distro.pipfield.ca/ It's a bit out of date 
though, but it probably wouldn't be too hard to modify (says he without 
looking at the source...)
