cat /etc/redhat-release works on many RPM-based systems. Even the ones that 
didn't fork from RH often include at least a symlink to the real file for 
compatibility.

    [user at hostname dir]$ cat /etc/redhat-release
    Mandrake Linux release 9.0 (dolphin) for i586
