When digital TV  PCI cards (DVB-T) are available, I'll be very keen to get
a Linux DVR setup. Especially for HD-TV.

With an analog TV card, and real-time software compression, this uses
a lot of CPU, so an old laptop is out. Are you planning to get a card
with hardware MPEG (etc) compression?

You can buy noise-reduction boxes to put a PC inside, like they used for
impact printers in the old days.
