Hmm... XF86 bug or kernel bug?

Esp if its XF86, try using MPlayer with -vo vesa , its slower (MUCH) but 
should be ok on a decent machine. Of course this assumes non-buggy VESA 
2.0 BIOS support. You may need to change to a VC and back to X before X 
will show up correctly after playing it.
