I have installed Debian (woody) for the first time on a old IBM Think
Pad 760. It was less pain full than I expected.
I gave up on full screen console but since it runs X quite nicely even
that turned out to be no big deal. I really only needed a few tools for
testing phone lines picking up mail and so on.

I have really got to like apt-get its brilliant.

I figured since I used apt-get to build my system I would already
have a working dialup. Not so. I have been thrashing about trying
to configure pppd for a user but just cant get it right.

I have added user to the appropriate groups and poured over the config
files. Used pppdconfig tools to try different set ups all with the same
result .User initiated pppd dials up fine but no network. I've been
using Mandrake for a while and must be out of practice.

Does apt-get call pon in the same way as $ pppd call isp.

I notice while apt-get is running user can access the network
(web, mail, ftp) fine. I figure there may be a permissions issue some
where but I'm stuffed if I can find it.

Any one recognize this? What's up.

Apologies for the ramble

Mark
