It is fixed now - I got an admission in an email that there were problems
that were just fixed and that my problem possibly could not be directly
related and could indeed be another new problem!

"This issue is being investigated. There has been an intermittent issue
affected all email services to these servers that has been resolved
today, however we cannot conclude the two issues are related."

I should frame that - it is a VERY rare occurrence. Looks like attaching
half my /var partition to some emails paid off :)

The original problem they speak of was randomly terminating SMTP connections
to extmail.bigpond.com (the MX for telstra hosted domains) and was leaving
some nice lengthy queues on my servers.

I guess when you have an email server farm with a node count approaching a
double digit power of 2, these kinds of problems just happen. Either that
or they have a P200 with a 10Mbit ethernet card handling email.
