Define "server" here not in the sense of "server operating system" but 
rather "that box in the corner is the server" - function rather than 
capability. My home box doesn't act a server but has postgresql, apache, 
etc on there for devel.

If you've got plently of swap and a bit of RAM, tmpfs is really good for 
/tmp (surprise, surprise). Efficient on disk space, easy, fast, and 
handily wiped at reboot or mount/umount.
