Or possibly the IDE cable.  Replacing that /seems/ to have fixed the
problems that I had with FS corruption a few weeks ago. (Or maybe
I'm just optimistic about that... *touches wood*)

A stock Debian stable system acting up in the way Leon described
seems like a hardware problem to me.
