Mark,

I'm no hardware guru.. but what bios version are you using?   Have a look at
http://www.asrock.com/support/index_download.htm
and download the latest version for your MoBo (V1.3)

Also, The horrible black and white is just an option, I think you'll find.
You should be able to choose from several different colour schemes.  Try
shift f2 while youre in the general settings part of the bios setup.
