I'd say you have dead keys enabled (borrowing a normal key, usually " 
and/or ', to do compose sequences. Vital if you want to be able to write 
UTF-8 on the console, annoying if all you'll ever want to input is 
ASCII.). Its an install option, but post-install I'm not sure how to 
change it.
