Yes, I have two clients running brainless modems under Linux; one is a 
NetComm with a Mars2 chipset, OTToMH the other is some kind of 
Conexant. I followed the directions, they worked (more realiably - less 
dropouts - than under Windows), end of story.

I would go for an external modem every time anyway. Cheap lightning 
insurance.
