Thanks James, but I am still not keen on installing the packages 
against the 'wishes' of apt. I don't really need to do the install, 
and in fact I will probably use the -s switch next time and get the 
dependencies right first. It's just that it won't let me do anything 
else without complaining, and I would like to resolve the problem 
without possibly creating a worse situation for myself :)

I think I see what I have done wrong - I downloaded and installed a 
package from a .deb file with dpkg  instead of getting what I wanted 
from the unstable distro with apt-get - does that make any 
difference? Have I confused the whole apt system? Is it recoverable?
