I'd come across the www-viz.tamu lead before and while it includes admin
topics it relates mainly to nuts and bolts issues such as hardware setup,
diagnostics, networking and the like.   I cheated and solved the problem
by driving (correctly this time, Doh!) the GUI interface to add a user.
Still appears to me a bit clunky to use command line methods (ducks flames
from IRIX users.)

Thanks though for refreshing my memory of that URL and pointing me to the
UCC site.   I'm bookmarking both - and printing out some of the tamu stuff
for future reading, as admin on the SGI will probably be part of my duties
henceforth.
