No sockets.

If your "Samba server" is running Linux; there are better options
than SMBfs.

It means more administration, but one should never simplify
administration to the point of things not working; unless you're
ghost-writing for the BOFH. :-)

Sockets and named pipes won't work. That may have some undesireable
and perhaps initially-undetected consequences.
