Most likely that's your problem. The kernel probably doesn't support 
your ATA chipset at more than a basic, generic ATA level.

What kernel version are you using, and what ATA chipset? Try posting 
'lspci' and 'uname -a' output.

Alternately, just upgrade to 2.4.21.
