Yup, I'd forgotten about stow.  I also vaguely recall another system
that was "like stow but better" but its name escapes me.

It will contain the Debian-specific patches if you just "apt-get source".
If you don't want the Debian packages you can un-tar the file that
apt-get download yourself.
