Might be worth a shot, at least...

I also tried the network card from my desktop, which works fine there
using the "tulip" driver, but fails on the Alpha.  This was with the
2.2.20 kernel again, perhaps that's been fixed in 2.4.x - if only it
would boot so I could find out.  *sigh*
