Have you seen what they plan on doing with their next few versions..
Sounds like they're trying to improve it enough that some of the bigger
distro's might want to add portage (or portage-ng) to their distro's..
I'm still trying to figure out what this "Catalyst" thing is they're going
to make....

They do have prebuilt binaries, libeCD's and so on these days that can
install at least as fast as other distros.
source distros are not for everyone, just as binary distros have
limitations. My first gentoo systems(s) were all done via modem. The
first one takes awhile, but once you have a stash of tarballs, its all
local.
But where's your sense of masochism!
