[plug] Alternatives to Minicom

Hi all,

I've been getting really fed up with Minicom in the last ten minutes or
so, it's been repeatedly crashing[1] on really really trivial things,
and its terminal emulation is less than impressive too[2].  Can anyone here
recommand a better alternative, or how to make Minicom less broken?  I
don't really care whether it's X11-based or console-based or what, just
so long as it bleeding /works/.

[1] It seems as though hitting the up arrow (to go through command-line
history) on any line that ends with var/ causes it to segfault.  Is that
utterly bizarre, or what?

[2] e.g. locking the screen into 80x24 mode during and after running
full-screen curses apps.  Grr - being able to make use of >= 50-line
xterms would be nice.
