[plug] Machine stops for a second - then continues on

"hdparm -u 1" for unmaskirq (make sure you read man hdparm first)  Also
check cdroms and anything else on an ide interface.

I was using 2.4.22 and now 23 with no problems - had some with older
kernels as you describe.  Fix was dma and unmaskirq - caused a few
coasters when cdburning until fixed.

also check the /proc interface for the drive, to make sure hdparm is
correctly reporting that dma is on
