thanks Cameron, James, Bernard for the FM snippets. I don't know how I 
missed that, given that

 >> help(file)

also tells you. *sigh*. I was looking at help(truncate) and thinking 
"arrggh, why does it not _work_".

I wonder why it treated "rw" as "r" rather than throwing an error; 
perhaps 'w' is also used as another flag. Not important now; thanks.
