uw has died only for my login, ripping it out and putting it
back doesn't fix things - wacking my home dir and mail spools
does nothing also.  

Courier-imapd assumes per user imap directories, the arguement 
of which goes in the init.d script.  Not pretty - and can't find 
much information on it to make it get in-line with the general 
thrust of imapd conventions.  

Cyrus looks like a complete botch-up and an overkill as you point 
out - what else is there? :)
