The 2nd kernel compilation still ended up in a kernel that was too big for
silo, so I ended up using a precompiled 2.4.20 I found.

It's running that kernel now, unfortunately it's still showing the same
symptoms (packet loss when using both ethernet cards)

Time for plan B - putting a suitable ethernet card in the HP

I'll play with that next week.  Unfortunately since the HP is currently
underneath the sparc and it's monitor, it may require Spark to be powered
down again.
