One reason to choose the promise or highpoint controllers is that they
are a high speed IDE interface in their own right, not just for the raid
part. At the time I bought my raid MB, this gave me 8 ide channels, all
100M, with the highpoint ones showing a performance advantage under test
over the standard via ide bus. Wish I had kept a copy of the test ...
Note that for software raid to work well, you need to put some thought
into how you are arranging disks (chunk size, spread across IDE channels
etc)
