I think that a hindrance to attendance, would be holding it 
mid-afternoon, rather than holding it during an evening.

I could see how an employer would react, at an MS site, to a request 
from an employee, for an afternoon away from the office, to attend a 
meeting as a member of a Linux User Group... "You can do what you want 
on your own time, but not on company time...".
