You say that while getting this info, it died?   Repeatable?   Most likely
not but then again...

When you had the ssh sessions, was the server "doing" anything - were you
monitoring system resource use through top, for instance?   And "stopped"
how ... ?   ssh sessions freeze or disconnect?   If console was displaying
info, was that still displayed?   If not was there any evidence that the
horiz and vert syncs were still arriving at the monitor (i.e. power LED on
some monitors changes colour or blinks in absence of sync signals.) 
Sorry for clutching at straws but you have my interest piqued over this
one :-)
