I can help you with BOTTOM speeds - non-desktops for inappropriate
comparison of course - my desktops are not running atm ;)

IBM PC330 - Dual PII 400 - IBM ServeRAID/Adaptec UWSCSI-3 (Raid 5)

/dev/sda1:
 Timing buffer-cache reads:   128 MB in  3.12 seconds = 41.03 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads:  64 MB in  7.82 seconds =  8.18 MB/sec

Sony Vaio PCG-GRX5P - PIV 2.0GHz - ATA100 - single disk - 5400RPM :(

/dev/hda2:
 Timing buffer-cache reads:   128 MB in  0.34 seconds =376.47 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads:  64 MB in  4.51 seconds = 14.19 MB/sec
