add this ine to /etc/ppp/options (or elsewhere if the pppd running your 
ADSL expects it elsewhere):

    idle 0

...or if there is already an idle option there, remove it. If that 
doesn't work, try idle 9999999 (a bit over 100 days) instead. If you 
want to stay up full-time even it Telstra chucks a brief sad, try 
adding:

    persist
