A more reasonable test subject:

AMD Athlon 1800+ (1.5GHz), 512MB RAM, 1x120g Western Digital JB (still
works, too!) on a standard PATA connection:

# hdparm -tT /dev/hda
/dev/hda:
  Timing buffer-cache reads: 128 MB in 0.56 seconds =228.57 MB/sec
  Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 1.39 seconds = 46.04 MB/sec

I'll try out my home box later, it's much the same but has 2 of those WD
drives, plus one Maxtor 120g drive.
