For every exim-afflicated system that I have been a user of,
"disappearing mail" is an integral part of its operation.

Are able to successfully manually connect to TCP port 25 and send mail
(e.g. `telnet <hostname> smtp`)? Or at least use a tool like tcpflow to
listen to what TCP data is actually managing to get through?
