You can easily communicate over Jabber using Net::Jabber from CPAN (or
Debian package or whatever takes your fancy).  There are some simple
examples of Net::Jabber usage over here:

Be warned that you'll need to tweak your use statements slightly with
newer versions of Net::Jabber, but any error messages will tell you what
to do.
