[plug] Network analysis info required

I need some help in figuring out what a certain application is doing to my
network. I figured there's plenty of people on this list with that sort of
knowledge. :o)

My firewall is a SuSE Linux box connected to an ADSL modem. NATed behind it
are a couple of Linux boxen and a Windows box. The Windows box runs a file
sharing program call eMule. eMule is causing major problems with the internet
connection - when it's running my other downloads from the Windows box and
the Linux boxen slow to a crawl. Stop eMule and the problem vanishes
immediately.

"eMule is swamping the downlink" you say. Well, yeah, only it isn't. Over a 10
minute period, ifconfig on the firewall external interface shows that only
about 4MB were actually downloaded from the 'net. eMule's stats page agrees
with that. Yet during that period all other downloads came in like they were
on a slow dialup link.

Something else, something more subtle, is going on. If anyone knows what it
might be I'd be pleased to hear about it. But, more importantly, what tools
and procedures would people recommend for tracking down a problem like this?
URLs on what to read would be as welcome as specific suggestions.
