I stay away from PHP, so this might be totally wrong, but ...

Sounds like PHP can't find MySQL.  Is it compiled with MySQL support?
If on Debian you'd need to ensure the php[34]-mysql package was
installed.

Google is choking with answers to this, it is a *very* commonly posted 
problem.  There are other less pretty ways to fix it too.
