Many thanks, Daniel.   Very worthwhile suggestions indeed.   I find the 
Gibraltar site a bit confusing but I'll persist.   Seems to infer Debian in 
the readme file and sure enough there is a version for Deb which suits me 
just fine.  Probably a tarball somewhere and maybe some rpm's for others.
